ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – On Monday, city councilors will hear a proposal for funding a program that would provide steady jobs and services to the homeless in hopes of reducing the number of people living on the streets. “This gives them the quick opportunity, to not only engage, but feel proud of the money they are earning and see an exit to the situation they are in with additional help,” said CABQ Health, Housing & Homelessness Director Gilbert Ramirez in August. Back in 2015, Mayor Richard Berry spearheaded a program called "There's a Better Way." That program provided over 6,000 jobs for the homeless but ended after a few years. Now the city wants to bring a similar pilot program back, calling it "A Better Way Forward." New Mexico nonprofit gifted fresh coat of paint This program will offer jobs like cleaning streets and sidewalks in the metro to those living at the Gateway Center. Those behind the project want to bring in more jobs with other city departments like Parks and Rec, and public libraries. If approved, the program would be under the Health, Housing and Homelessness Department. According to the proposal, it would start by employing 16 people at $12 an hour for 40 hours a week. This time around, the program would provide transportation to and from job sites and connections to other services like financial literacy, banking, and case management. The city estimates the program would cost more than $500,000. With the Solid Waste Department allocating part of the funding. If city council approves the day labor program, those behind it hope to have it operating within 90 days of getting a green light. Councilors will hear the funding proposal for the pilot program Monday afternoon.
