HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A local organization by the name of Destiny House is helping create a safe space for mothers that are in recovery for substance abuse. "There is a stigma to raising your children and being in recovery and being so worried about protective services and, you know, courts and so forth,'' said Hayley, a mother in recovery. Eight months ago, she stepped into a sober living house called Destiny House, a program run by the McShin Foundation specifically designed for mothers like her -- women fighting substance abuse disorder with the hope of providing a stable home for their children. Hayley said she has struggled with addiction for years, but becoming a mother has transformed her recovery process. "I actually was kind of, like, just searching out endlessly. I wanted a place where it was okay to bring me and my son, so that we could both go through recovery together and have that opportunity," Hayley said. "And I stumbled across McShin." Destiny House opened its doors in April 2023, aiming to create a safe space for mothers and their children. "We wanted to fill that need in the community," said Honesty Liller, CEO of the McShin Foundation. “To provide a home, not necessarily a facility, but an actual home for these moms to come to with their children and reduce the numbers that are in foster care right now.” In this supportive environment, Hayley lives with two other mothers, each on their own path to recovery, along with their kids. Her son has quickly formed bonds with his new “family.” The programs offered at Destiny House have played a crucial role in Hayley's recovery. “It can be very difficult, but the great thing is that recovery is a community just the same way that family should be,” she explains. “And being at McShin only intensifies that family and community feel, so that does make it a lot easier to manage.”
