SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- The Select Committee on Legislative Relationships with Ellsworth Air Force Base was formed to help the base and state lawmakers better work together. The pending arrival of the B-21 Raider and its support personnel will mean thousands of new airmen and their families moving to South Dakota. "What are those things that we can do to support the base?" Said Kevin Case. The Superintendent of the Douglas School district says they need a new elementary school before the expected 1500 kids arrive. At the meeting in Sioux Falls on Thursday the Commander of the 28th Bomber Wing was asked how important quality schools are to air force bases. "It is critically important. I have seen former generals threaten to move their base, take that mission away form the base. If the local school district did not improve. That's not been local, I don't think we are ever going to get to that threat, but again I don't control those decisions," said Colonel Derek Oakley. Deadwood Police search for stolen electric wheelchair The district says it needs 62 million dollars for a new school, which includes 15 million from the state. U.S. Senator Mike Rounds is requesting 42 million dollars in federal funds to help build the school. He told state lawmakers the B-21 is going to be a big part of our nation's defense and South Dakotans should be proud of that. "I simply would suggest a way to show the rest of the country that we are very serious and we get how real the threat is figure out what part of that additional, just for this Douglas School District, should be taken at the local level and how much can the state help," said Rounds. Senator John Thune also spoke to the lawmakers and is backing Rounds' request "I would offer up to you how important I think this is," Thune said.Earlier this year, State lawmakers rejected the Douglas School District's request for 15 million dollars in funding. Supporters could face an even tighter budget situation when the legislative session begins again in Pierre in January.
