EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park in Downtown El Paso -- a Michelin One Key-rated hotel -- launched its new Agave Room, which now houses the largest agave spirits collection in the country, hotel officials said. Our KTSM crews got an inside look at one of their tasting dinners.  “It started with a dream. We already had a great collection of agave spirits, and we wanted to house all the bottles together. The capacity here is about 1,200 bottles, which is great because we can store more than half of our inventory,” said the Plaza Hotel’s General Manager Adrian Gonzalez.  When Gonzalez arrived in 2021 to take on his current role, the Plaza Hotel already had its collection of 800 agave spirits, but he said they were scattered throughout the hotel.  “The (spirits were) behind the Ambar (Hotel’s restaurant) bar in the Tequila Towers, in the kitchen, basement,” Gonzalez.  Gonzalez said the Agave Room draws inspiration from some of the finest tequila houses in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, where agave tasting dinners are a popular attraction that feature some of the finest brands of agave spirits in Mexico.   Our KTSM crews captured a Clase Azul Mexico-themed tasting dinner, one of the higher-end brands of Mexican tequila.  The dinner featured a six-course meal carefully crafted to complement each of six agaves -- Clase Azul Tequila Reposado, Plata, Gold, Anejo, and Clase Azul Mezcal Guerrero and San Luis Potosí.  The dinner was led by Gonzalez who is an agave enthusiast, who described the distinct tastes of each agave and the reason for the pairing with each dish.  Aleks Luna, a manager with Southern Glazers Wine and Spirits, also led a presentation alongside Gonzalez. Having studied the tequila-brand Clase Azul Mexico, Luna described the background and history of the brand, while explaining the intricate process of how Clase Azul’s distinct bottles are crafted.  Now this dinner was purely Clase Azul-themed. Their agave room houses over 800 different agaves, and in their launch week the Plaza Hotel hosted separate themed dinners -- a Soledad and Socorro tequila dinner, a Patron tequila dinner, and one where Felipe Camarena himself, the maker of the iconic G4 tequila, hosted the dinner.   The Agave Room’s hours will vary based on events. Tasting dinners will take place from 7 to 10 p.m., with agave spirits tasting happening every Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. starting in December.  Dinners are priced at $175 per person, with spirits tastings priced at $50. The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park is located at 106 W. Mills Ave. For more information, you can call (915) 440-7666 or click here.
