WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) - A massive fire engulfed the headquarters of Maurice’s Piggie Park, a cherished local BBQ institution at 1601 Charleston Highway in West Columbia on Saturday night. According to the Piggie Park family, the blaze destroyed the BBQ pits, food preparation and processing facilities, and office spaces, erasing nearly seven decades of hard work and memories. The BBQ pits, which have been operating at this location since 1992, were the primary site for preparing meats and sides for Piggie Park's popular restaurants. Now, the family faces what they describe as an “unbelievable mountain to climb” to rebuild. The Piggie Park family said, "It is heartbreaking to see these 69 years of hard work and generations of memories at this location burned to the ground." Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the main restaurant building across the parking lot remains untouched. The iconic Piggie Park BBQ sign and an American flag, rescued by firefighters, also survived the disaster. The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the 50 firefighters and first responders from surrounding counties, including crews from Cayce, Columbia, Irmo, and Lexington, who assisted the West Columbia Fire Department as they battled the fire throughout the night. Special thanks went to Matt from Columbia Auto Recovery and Towing, who saved several delivery and food trucks by moving them to safety when he happened to see the fire begin. Today, the Charleston Highway location is closed, while other Piggie Park locations across the Midlands are expected to remain open until food supplies run out. All locations will be closed Monday until further notice as the family takes steps toward recovery and rebuilding. "For anyone who knows our family, knows we won’t give up and will work endlessly to do what we need to do to continue the BBQ legacy and support our 150 employees and community we love dearly," the Piggie Park family stated. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
