A video shared on social media over the weekend revealed a post-game altercation between Dennis Schröder, Ben Simmons and a heckling Orlando Magic fan. The fan in question was overheard yelling “you trash” as Simmons as the Nets walked through the Kia Center player’s tunnel following Friday’s 116-101 loss. Simmons, who finished the night with seven points, six rebounds and three assists, replied, “Why didn’t you say it when I was there, [expletive].” Schröder backtracked and confronted the fan soon after and could be heard in the video saying, “Who talking [expletive] to Ben?” Arena security was forced to step in to de-escalate the matter. “No matter what happens to one of my teammates I’m going to stand up for him,” Schröder told reporters in the locker room ahead of Sunday’s home opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. “So, you know whenever something happens like that, I speak up for them.” Schröder is viewed as one of the veteran leaders of this young Nets team. While post-game scenarios like that should be avoided whenever possible, head coach Jordi Fernandez appreciates how Schröder had Simmons’ back when he needed some uplift. “With Dennis, that’s who is he is,” Fernandez said. “He’s a tough competitor, leader, and he does it in his own way, and he’ll let you know, and I like it. Also, his teammates and everybody else can feel him. And it’s important because when we’re going back to: who do we want to be and how do we want to do it? How do we represent the Brooklyn grit and The Brooklyn Way? And Dennis can definitely help us with that part with his toughness, with the way he competes… So, you see out there a tough dude. And all his teammates see it, so that’s part of leadership. Just walking the walk instead of talking the talk. That’s important.” HOME OPENER Sunday’s game against Milwaukee was Brooklyn’s first at Barclays Center this season. It was Fernandez’s first regular-season home game as Nets head coach, and he had plenty of family members in attendance to support him. “My wife’s here, my kids are here, my parents are here, my mother and law and her husband are here,” Fernandez said. “It doesn’t get better than this, the fans, right? So, speaking about myself and my family, and then it’s always good to play at home. You know that extra energy you have, that sixth player brings with the fans. It’s pretty cool and I’m excited to play our first game here.” The Nets had a 20-21record at Barclays Center last season. THE PRICE JUST WENT UP In its latest analysis of NBA teams’ finances, Forbes estimated that the Nets are now worth $4.8 billion, a 25% increase from a year ago. That puts Brooklyn in eighth place out of 30 NBA teams. The 25% jump is tied for second biggest in the league with Milwaukee and Memphis. Boston had the biggest jump at 28%. The Warriors ($8.8 billion), Knicks ($7.5 billion), Lakers ($7.1 billion), Celtics ($6.0 billion), Clippers ($5.5 billion), Bulls ($5.0 billion and Rockets ($4.9 billion) are the seven teams ahead of Brooklyn in valuation.
