The Hopewell Valley football team completed an undefeated regular season and now has a No. 1 seed in the state playoffs. The Bulldogs (9-0) finished second in UPR in the 29-team South Group III super section and were seeded in the top spot in the South Jersey section. Somerville (9-0) was the top overall seed and took the No. 1 spot in Central Jersey section. Dave Caldwell’s side has a familiar first-round opponent in WJFL Capitol Division rival Nottingham (3-6). Milo McGurie’s Northstars won three of their final four games after an 0-5 start, but backed into the playoffs after a 34-0 loss to Steinert in the Battle for Klockner Road on Saturday. Hopewell won the regular-season meeting, 45-12, back on Sept. 20. In Central Group III, No. 5 seed Allentown (6-3) has a trip to No. 4 seed Ocean City (5-4). The Redbirds’ overtime loss to Notre Dame on Friday night ended up costing them a first-round home game as they ended up ninth in UPR. No. 2 seed Burlington Twp. (8-1) hots No. 7 seed Delsea (2-6). In Group IV, Steinert (4-4) is the No. 7 seed in South Jersey and faces No. 2 seed Middletown North (7-0). Princeton High (5-4) ended a 10-year playoff drought with a fourth-and-goal stand against West Windsor on Saturday and got a date with No. 1 seed Winslow Twp. (9-0) in that same section Northern Burlington (4-5) is also a No. 7 seed in Central Jersey IV and travels to No. 2 seed Brick Memorial (7-2). First-round games are scheduled for this weekend. The state championship games are set to take place between Nov. 29 and Dec. 4 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford or SHI Stadium in Piscataway. Teams that didn’t make the playoffs have the option of playing a regional crossover game.
