RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- According to the Virginia Tourism Corporation, Virginia is home to many famous musicians and bands. 8News has compiled a list of five famous musicians and bands from Virginia, as well as some of the marks they have made in and out of the state. (Photo by Amy Harris/Invision/AP) Richmond-area native Lucy Dacus is an indie rock artist known for her song "Night Shift," which has garnered more than 100 million streams on the music streaming app Spotify as of October 2024. The music video for Dacus' song "Hot & Heavy," featured in her 2021 album "Home Video," was filmed at the Byrd Theatre in Richmond. Dacus is also part of the band boygenius with fellow music artists Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, which debuted their first extended play, or EP, in 2018. In February 2024, the supergroup won three Grammys at the 66th annual Grammy Awards, with their 2023 album, "The Record," winning for best alternative album, and their song "Not Strong Enough" winning for best rock performance and best rock song. According to the Virginia Tourism Corporation, Dacus was named by Rolling Stone as one of the "10 New Artists You Need to Know in 2016." Missy Elliott Missy Elliott returned to her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia on Oct. 17, 2023, which was designed as "Missy Elliott Day" in 2022. According to the Virginia Tourism Corporation, female hip-hop artist Missy Elliott was born in Portsmouth and continues to live in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. Elliott is a songwriter, producer, talent scout and record mogul. Her most well-known songs include "Work It" and "Lose Control," which feature singer Ciara and rapper Fat Man Scoop. In August of 2022, the Portsmouth City Council unanimously voted to rename a street to "Missy Elliott Boulevard." At the dedication ceremony for the street renaming, Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover presented Elliott with a key to the city. Governor Glenn Youngkin has also declared Oct. 17 as Missy Elliott Day. According to the Virginia Tourism Corporation, he spent part of his childhood in Alexandria. Before founding the band, Grohl was a drummer in the grunge band Nirvana from 1990 to 1994. In 2014, the Foo Fighters performed in Richmond at a crowd-funded concert at The National, according to Rolling Stone. Fans funded over $70,000 to bring the band back for their first performance in the city since 1998. The performance was such a success that Sept. 17 was declared "Foo Fighters Day RVA," according to Rolling Stone. (Photo by Amy Harris/Invision/AP) The heavy metal band GWAR was formed in Richmond and can be distinctively identified on stage for their barbaric warrior costumes, according to the Virginia Tourism Corporation. Since its formation in 1984, the band has reportedly sold more than 820,000 records. In 2015, the band joined forces with Travis Croxton, Richmond's "Restaurateur of the Year 2014," to create the GWARbar, located at 217 W. Clay St. in Richmond. According to the bar's website, GWAR band member Michael Derks brought over 30 years of restaurant experience to help create "a bar and restaurant like no other." (Photo: Annie Gallo/WRIC) Popular songwriter and producer Pharrell Williams was born in Virginia Beach, according to the Virginia Tourism Corporation. In the spring and summer, Williams began filming for his musical "Atlantis," which is said to be a coming-of-age story set in the 70s that is based on Williams' life growing up in Virginia Beach's Atlantis Apartments. As filming for the musical took place in various parts of Central and Coastal Virginia, Williams made a stop at the Richmond restaurant Croaker's Spot in May. Williams also founded the music festival Something in the Water, which was held in Virginia Beach in 2019 and 2023, with plans to bring it back in 2025.
