NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Everywhere else in the world, it's autumn. The leaf-falling season. The harvest season. But in New Orleans, it's gumbo season, shrimp stew season and etouffee season. These big bowl meals are reserved for the days when the wind is blowing a little hard and there is a rare chill in the New Orleans air. Luckily, a number of these heartwarming meals can be found at locally loved New Orleans restaurants. At the first drop of temperature, the gumbo pots come. At the famed Dooky Chase Restaurant on Orleans Avenue, the pot stays on the fire cooking up seafood, chicken and sausage, and if you dare to be different, okra gumbo. Whether it be lunch or dinner, a cup or bowl of one of the "Queen of Creole Cuisine" Leah Chase's famed recipes are always ready. There is also the option of creole gumbo, which can be found at Commanders Palace on Washington Avenue. If there's no hunger for gumbo but still want the seafood, head to Evangeline's on Decatur Street for a bowl of crawfish etouffee, which, just like jumbo, is served over rice. There are options when it comes to this Cajun delight. Ther's chicken, shrimp, crawfish, or creole, which is tomato-based. Etouffee is not to be confused with shrimp creole. Etouffee is a roux-based dish, while with creole the holy trinity is sautéd, throw in some tomatoes, and shrimp and serve over rice with a side of hot, buttered cornbread. For breakfast, have a hot and hearty bowl of shrimp and grits. This meal can be found on every corner of the French Quarter. Families usually head to Daisy Dukes on Chartres Street or take their mother to Mothers on Poydras Street. One of the two Another Broken Egg locations on Magazine Street or Harrison Avenue will be happy to serve. At the end of a cool day, nothing beats a meal made by the hands of loved ones. A homemade pot of love will fill you up in more ways than one. Happy Fall New Orleans!
