LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Lexington Sporting Club (LSC) is looking for a new manager for its United Soccer League Championship (USLC) side after moving former head coach Darren Powell to a youth academy coaching role. The club is aiming to have a new manager in place before next season. “I want to thank all the players, staff, fans and owners for their incredible efforts this past season. As we continue to elevate LSC to new heights, I’m excited about the club’s future and the journey ahead together,” said Powell. The decision comes hours after the team’s last match in the United Soccer League One (USL1), a 3-0 win away at Chattanooga Red Wolves on Saturday night. That match was the team’s last in USL1 as it moves up a tier to the USLC next season. Powell was LSC’s second full-time head coach for the men’s side. Under his leadership, LSC was 5-6-11 (W-D-L) in the league and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. Lex Sporting was also bounced from the US Open Cup in the first round at the hands of Vermont Green FC, a team in the lower-tier United Soccer League Two, in March. Powell lasted for one season as the manager after his predecessor, Sam Stockley, managed the team for most of its inaugural season until he was moved to the role of Men’s Sporting Director. “Darren embodies the values of our club with his character and approach to the game. Moving him into a technical role across the club enables us to reassess our first team’s performance while giving our youth players the opportunity to learn from his professional standards,” said CEO Kim Shelton.
