1 in custody after active shooter alert, 2 reports of gunfire at NC Central homecoming in Durham

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) -- Officials at North Carolina Central University in Durham said a suspect was in custody from an "active shooter alert" just after gunfire during the school's "Ultimate Homecoming Experience" Saturday night.
N.C. Central officials only revealed Sunday that four people were shot Saturday night during the second round of gunfire that triggered a second active shooter alert. The second report of gunfire was made to N.C. Central police just before 9 p.m. -- after the initial active-shooter alert was over, according to records from the university.

The active-shooter alert for the campus was issued at 7:43 p.m., according to an 8:57 p.m. news release from the North Carolina Central University Office of Communications and Marketing.
The news release said there were no "gunshot-related injuries" but officials did not say if any gunshots were fired or if there were other injuries.

The N.C. Central daily crime and fire log said gunshots were reported at 7:38 p.m. at Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall parking lot at 2103 Fayetteville St.
The alert was lifted just after 8:10 p.m., university officials said in the release.
However, at 8:59 p.m. -- just 2 minutes after the media received the news release -- another shots-fired report was made to N.C. Central authorities at 231 Eagle Campus Drive, according to the N.C. Central daily crime log.

CBS 17 has asked N.C. Central officials about the possibility of a second active-shooter alert around 9 p.m., but no one ever replied Saturday night.
On Saturday until 10:30 p.m., N.C. Central said there were various homecoming events. The university played Morgan State in a homecoming football game that started at 3:30 p.m.
Officials said the suspect in the initial gunfire report is in police custody.
"The NCCU Police Department and the Durham Police Department are continuing their investigation," the release said.
The university said additional information would be released "as it becomes available."
