Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who killed her two small sons 30 years ago, could get out on parole next month. Thirty years ago, Smith had the region, and quickly the nation, hanging on her pleas. A nation immersed in finding three-year-old Michael and 14-month old Alexander. Smith falsely claimed that the children had been carjacked by a black man. For nine days, volunteers searched for Smith’s Mazda and the boys. Their father, David, initially unaware law enforcement quickly noticed inconsistencies in Susan’s claims. “I was hearing rumors of that but they never told me that at all that they didn’t believe her,” David said. “And it was frustrating too during that time because I believed her. 100%. And I felt that they were wasting time dealing with her on these polygraph failures.” It was after a New York trip and more appeals to the nation that the sheriff turned up the heat. Smith confessed to Union County Sheriff Howard Wells, and the bodies of Michael and Alexander and the Mazda were found at the bottom of John D. Long Lake.  A jury found Smith guilty in 1995 and sentenced her to life in prison for the murders of her two sons. Smith’s parole hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, November 20th.
