BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Death is not something people tend to look forward to at the end of their lives, but it is important to discuss nonetheless — and while many have ideas of how they would like to pass away, these vary immensely across America. This begs the question: How would North Dakotans like to spend their last moments? During a poll on how Americans would most like to die, insurance agency Choice Mutual surveyed 3,000 people from across the country on their ideal end-of-life situation. When the results of this poll were tallied, it was determined that the perfect death for a North Dakotan would be to pass while hiking White Butte, the state's highest point. This sentiment of dying in nature is one shared by many states, and respondents from all across the country (including Montana, West Virginia, Florida, and California) also showed interest in spending their last moments on a trail, beach, or body of water. This, of course, is not to say that everyone in the US would prefer an outdoor excursion: In many cases, respondents from states like Nevada, Mississippi, and Alabama reported they would prefer to die while engaging in activities like drinking in a bar, gambling in Vegas, and watching their favorite college sports teams. Residents of some states report that they would even be satisfied dying while consuming one of their home's iconic meals or drinks (such as Maine lobster, Tennessee whiskey, or Wisconsin bratwurst). Below is a list of the most prevalent takeaways from this part of the study. When asked about who they would want by their side in their final moments, 50% of respondents said they would prefer to be surrounded by friends and family, while 19% instead wanted the presence of one special person. 13% also showed interest in having their pets present. 27% of the polled Americans said they would want to spend the last hour of their lives laughing, embracing the joy and humor of existence, while 24% would instead enjoy a moment of calm. Another 22% hoped their journey to death would be more spiritual, and focus on peace and closure above all else. 31% of North Dakotans would like to have the end of their life celebrated with a massive party of some sort, while 29% opted for a quiet memorial instead. Another 15% showed interest in celebrating with a tree-planting ceremony, suggesting growth, life, and a lasting legacy. The discussion concluded by asking what respondents would most like to see printed in their obituary— where it was found that 21% of people hoped it would begin with the fact that they "always made people laugh." Another 19%, meanwhile, expressed a desire to be remembered as "having lived life to the fullest" or "being beloved by family and friends," suggesting that family, community, and experiences are most likely to define a full and happy life. "Planning for the end of life can feel daunting, but it’s also an opportunity to think about how we want to be remembered and what truly matters to us," says Anthony Martin, CEO & Founder of Choice Mutual. "Our survey revealed that people want their final moments to reflect their passions and joys, whether that’s enjoying a favorite meal, celebrating at a festival, or simply being surrounded by nature. It’s a reminder that life is about making the most of every moment - even the very last one."
