Brady Jones completed 21 of 26 passes for 331 yards and tied a program record by throwing eight touchdown passes as the Riverside City College football team cruised to a 69-3 victory over Southwestern in a National-Southern Conference game Saturday at Wheelock Stadium in Riverside. Jones matched the program record held by Jacob Barlage, who threw eight touchdown passes in a 76-3 victory over Orange Coast College on Nov. 9, 2019. Jones set another program record earlier this season with 535 passing yards in a 70-45 win over El Camino College on Sept. 21. Making Jones’ record-tying performance even more impressive was his eighth touchdown pass came with 10:32 remaining in third quarter. RCC (6-1 overall, 4-0 in conference) raced out to a 34-0 lead after one quarter, as Jones threw touchdown passes to Kaden Willerford (18 yards), Jackson Owens (14 and 10 yards), Elijah Vasquez (22 yards) and Dominic Cox (34 yards). Jones connected with Cox (32 yards) and Beau Bruins (18 yards) for touchdowns in the second quarter. Jones’ final touchdown pass of the game was a 29-yarder to D’Mariya Thomas in the third period. Cox finished with six catches for 138 yards, and Owens had seven receptions for 57 yards. Tayven Anderson returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter for the TIgers. RCC heads to Mission Viejo to face Saddleback in a conference game Saturday, Nov. 2. C-M-S HOLDS OFF REDLANDS Jacob O’Connell returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ defense came up big once again in the final minutes as the Stags defeated University of Redlands 17-10 in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Ted Runner Stadium in Redlands. Redlands (2-5 overall, 2-3 in conference) was looking for the tying score late in the game, but Taylor Bowie was stopped by Benjamin Littlefield for no gain on fourth-and-2 at the C-M-S 10 with 1:54 remaining on the clock. The Stags ran off the remaining time to preserve the victory. Saturday’s game was a defensive battle, as the team combined for only 462 yards of offense (273 for Redlands, 189 for C-M-S). C-M-S (6-1, 4-1) took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter after a 42-yard field goal by Rich Brutto and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Walter Kuhlenkamp to Anderson Cynkar. Aidan Petruescu got Redlands on the board when he kicked a 49-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. O’Connell’s interception return extended the C-M-S advantage to 17-3 with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter. Redlands made it a one-score game when Jayden Mckey tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Evan Aguon with 11:07 remaining in the game. Kuhlenkamp threw for 114 yards, and Justin Edwards ran for 57 yards on 19 carries for the Stags. Mckey passed for 145 yards, and Bowie finished with 73 yards on 15 carries for Redlands. C-M-S is tied with Chapman for first place in the SCIAC’s Surf Division standings. The Stags look to avenge their only conference loss when they play at Chapman on Saturday, Nov. 2. Redlands travels to La Verne for a SCIAC game Nov. 2, at Ortmayer Stadium. CHAFFEY STORMS PAST DESERT Julian Viramontes tossed a 14-yard touchdown to Nehemiah Harrison with 8:59 remaining in the game as Chaffey College overcame seven turnovers and rallied for a 26-23 win over College of the Desert in an American-Metro Conference game Saturday night at Grigsby Field in Rancho Cucamonga. Chaffey (6-1 overall, 2-0 in conference) outscored Desert 19-0 in the second half. Desert scored all 23 of its points in the second quarter to take the lead at halftime. Viramontes got the comeback started in the third period with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Damari Heller. Zyhaire Lewis blocked a punt and the Panthers recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 23-19 with 3:13 remaining in the third quarter. Chaffey took its first lead of the night on the touchdown pass from Viramontes to Harrison, and the defense made the lead hold up down the stretch. Viramontes passed for 213 yards and three touchdowns but also threw four interceptions. Christian Bozeman led the ground attack for the Panthers with 173 yards on 29 carries. Harrison had five receptions for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Chaffey hosts Compton in a conference game Saturday, Nov. 2, at Grigsby Field. POMONA-PITZER ROUTS LA VERNE Grady Russo completed 15 of 20 passes for 263 yards and tossed five touchdown passes as Pomona-Pitzer routed La Verne 51-14 in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday evening at Merritt Field in Claremont. Pomona-Pitzer (5-2 overall, 4-1 in conference) left no doubt, taking a 41-0 lead by halftime. Russo threw touchdown passes to Matthias Olson (49 yards), Quinten Wimmer (42 yards) and Mitchell Rodenbaugh (54 yards) in the first quarter to give the Sagehens a 20-0 advantage. Russo connected with Sander Wimmer for strikes of 10 and 41 yards in the second period. Quentin Wimmer finished the game with seven receptions for 78 yards. Brian Rudden tossed touchdown passes to Julian Martinez and Jimmy Rumsey in the fourth quarter for La Verne (0-7, 0-5). Malcom Perry added 106 yards on the ground for the Leopards. Pomona-Pitzer has a two-game lead in the SCIAC’s Sun Division standings and needs to win only one of its final two games to secure a spot in the conference championship game. The Stags host Cal Lutheran in conference action Saturday, Nov. 2, at Merritt Field. La Verne hosts Redlands in a SCIAC game Saturday, Nov. 2, at Ortmayer Stadium. MSJC RALLY FALLS SHORT Logan Gonzalez passed for 374 yards and three touchdowns and added a score on the ground, but Mt. San Jacinto College’s rally came up short as the Eagles lost to San Diego Mesa 35-28 in a National-Southern Conference game Saturday evening at HCN Bank Stadium in Menifee. MSJC (4-3 overall, 2-2 in conference) faced a 21-7 deficit after the opening quarter and trailed 35-21 with 2:21 left in the game. The Eagles tried hard to pull off an improbable comeback. Gonzalez completed a 35-yard pass to Jackson Weng and then a 46-yard touchdown pass to Donte Sams to get MSJC within 35-21 with 1:52 left on the clock. The Eagles recovered an onside kick, and Gonzalez tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Koa Apana with 28 seconds remaining to make it a one-score game. MSJC was unable to recover another onside kick, however, and Mesa ran out the final 27 seconds left on the clock. MSJC’s Christian Kretz finished the evening with 10 receptions for 131 yards. Jax Leatherwood passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns to lead the way for Mesa, while Jalil Tucker had four catches for 138 yards and three touchdowns (40, 64 and 28 yards). MSJC hosts Palomar in a conference game Saturday, Nov. 2, at HCN Bank Stadium.
