Led by a historic rushing performance by quarterback Brayden Schager, the University of Hawaii football team returned to the win column with a 34-13 victory over Nevada at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on Saturday night. Hawaii, which hadn't won since defeating Northern Iowa on Sept. 21, improved to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in Mountain West Conference play, while Nevada dropped to 3-6 overall, including 0-3 in conference play. All the latest sports news from Hawaii's sports station The Rainbow Warriors were led by Schager's four rushing touchdowns, tying a program record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single game. Glenn Freitas did it twice in 1995 and Ivin Jasper did it once in 1993. Meanwhile, the four rushing scores were the most in a game in program history since Alex Green did so against Utah State in 2010. The Rainbow Warriors scored on the game's opening drive, manufacturing a 9-play, 75-yard opening drive with a 1-yard Brayden Schager QB sneak with 10:10 left in the first quarter. Hawaii led 14-0 by the end of the first with another drive near five minutes that ended with another Schager QB sneak. Hawaii entered the half with a 17-0 lead after Kansei Matsuzawa's 27-yard field goal with nine seconds left in the second quarter. Nevada cut into the lead almost immediately after the break as Chubba Purdy and Marcus Bellon connected on a 63-yard touchdown with 14:29 left in the third quarter. Schager's third rushing score of the day from three yards out gave Hawaii a 24-7 lead with 1:56 left in the third quarter. However, a series of exchanged shoves between the two teams led to a total of five players getting flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, causing a temporary stop in the action. Hawaii appeared to put the game out of reach on Schager's fourth score of the day, a 6-yard score with 14:07 left, but the Wolf Pack scored on their next drive and recovered the ensuing onside kick. A forced fumble by UH defensive standout Cam Stone that was recovered by Meki Pei ultimately thwarted Nevada's late comeback efforts. Schager carried the ball 19 times for a total of 120 yards, becoming the first UH quarterback to surpass 100 yards in a game since Chevan Cordeiro did so in the team's 2020 season opener. From the air, Schager completed 14 of his 25 passes for 153 yards and an interception. With regular starter Brendon Lewis unavailable due to injury, Nevada split quarterback duties between Chubba Purdy and Saint Louis alumnus and Lahaina native AJ Bianco. Bianco completed 13 of 21 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, while Purdy completed 13 of his 18 passes for 155 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Defensively, Logan Taylor had a team-high eight tackles for Hawaii, while Stone added seven tackles to go with a pass breakup and forced fumble. For Nevada, Kitan Crawford had a game-high nine tackles. Next up for the Rainbow Warriors is a road contest at Fresno State on Nov. 2, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. HST.
