MADISON, Wis. – Right after reaching the end zone for the first time since his high school days, Jaylen Reed tossed the football to his mother, LaToyia Johnson, in the stands Saturday night. He was flagged for a taunting penalty and then security took the ball away from his mother, but not for long. “I got the ball,” he said. “I can’t tell you what I did to get it back, but I got it.” Reed intercepted Braedyn Locke’s third-quarter pass and returned it 19 yards for a go-ahead touchdown, the pivotal play in Penn State’s 28-13 victory over Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium. The third-ranked Nittany Lions trailed 10-7 midway through the third quarter when the Badgers had a third-and-14 from their 8-yard line. Defensive tackle Hakeem Beamon fought through a double-team block to pressure Locke, whose pass sailed into Reed’s hands. He received a couple blocks and scored for the first time since his senior year at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit when he had another pick-six. “I was reading the quarterback’s eyes, broke on the ball and just made the play,” Reed said. “When I caught the ball I knew I was going for a touchdown.” Two weeks ago at USC, Reed intercepted Miller Moss’ pass in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and help Penn State win 33-30. He made five tackles against Wisconsin and leads the team with 44. He’s emerged as a leader of the defense and one of its very best players since fellow safety KJ Winston sustained a season-ending injury in September. “That’s my brother,” said safety Zakee Wheatley, who had a game-high 10 tackles. “We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs. That’s my dog. Seeing him make that play, I couldn’t be more excited.” Happy return: Former Warwick High standout Nolan Rucci made a victorious return to Wisconsin. Rucci transferred to Penn State in January after spending 2.5 years with the Badgers. He wound up playing the final three quarters at right tackle after starter Anthony Donkoh left with an injury. “It was a pretty special opportunity,” Rucci said. “To take that field against a team that I have so many connections to, it was a pretty cool opportunity. It was really special for me.” Rucci helped the Lions gain 419 total yards and remain unbeaten heading into their Big Ten showdown next Saturday against Ohio State at Beaver Stadium. If Donkoh is unable to play, Ricci probably will make his first start for Penn State against the Buckeyes. “Obviously I have a lot of things to work on going into next week,” he said. “I think it was a great learning experience. I’m super excited to get back out on the practice field and get after it.” Injury report: Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, right tackle Anthony Donkoh all left Saturday night’s game with injuries. Allar apparently hurt his left knee when he was sacked late in the second quarter. He walked to the locker room with a slight limp and did not return. Penn State coach James Franklin said he asked Allar to be honest with him at halftime. Allar said he didn’t feel like he would be mobile enough to run the offense in the second half. Donkoh has been dealing with an injury to his right arm or shoulder for the last several weeks. He started and left the game before the end of the first quarter. Dennis-Sutton injured his right leg late in the second quarter. He played the first snap of the third quarter and then took himself out of the game.
