Union goalkeeper Holden Trent passed away on Saturday, the club announced. He was 25 years old. The goalie had been hospitalized in intensive care on Thursday, five days after the end of the Union season. The club did not release details as to a cause of death. “The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent,” the Union said in a club statement. “While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better. He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends.” Trent’s family posted a message on his Instagram account announcing his passing and thanking them for their prayers and support. “Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden,” they wrote. The MLS Players Association also released a statement. “The MLSPA and the entire player community are devastated by the tragic loss of Holden Trent,” it read. “Holden will be remembered not just as a dedicated competitor and teammate, but as a beloved son, brother, fiancé and friend. Our hearts are with his family and all who knew and loved him. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that Holden’s family and teammates have access to all available resources as they navigate through this horrible tragedy.” The Union held a moment of silence and had Trent’s No. 13 jersey on hand before a Union II playoff game at Subaru Park Saturday night. Trent’s alma mater High Point University also had his jersey on the sidelines for its game Saturday. Union II coach Marlon LeBlanc addressed the team with the news about a half-hour before they were due to take the field in an Eastern Conference semifinal. He shared news that Trent was an organ donor and that he’d “gone out a hero,” and used that story to motivate the group, albeit one that wasn’t overly close to Trent, who was several years older than many of the teens on the team. “We didn’t want to make tonight just about Holden, but we wanted to make sure we went out and we honored him,” LeBlanc said after the team advanced in penalty kicks against Charlotte’s reserve team, Crown Legacy. “And I think the guys went out and honored him with the performance.” Trent was taken with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft out of High Point. He did not play in a competitive game for the Union in two years, making the bench eight times this year as an unused sub. He suffered through a hand injury that limited him for three months in the spring. Trent made six appearances for Union II in MLS Next Pro, including just one this season, in June. A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent transferred from West Virginia to High Point, where he was a senior captain and led the team to its first ever NCAA Tournament win.
