RIVERSIDE — Halftime at flag football games lasts only five minutes, so teams don’t have much time to talk things over before stepping back onto the field. King could have made a costly mistake at the end of the first half Saturday evening when quarterback Amanda Lehman took a knee in order to run out the clock. The problem was Lehman was in the end zone when her knee touched down to the turf, and the resulting safety gave Etiwanda an 8-6 advantage at the break. “It was a rough way to end the half, but we got things taken care of during our little break,” Lehman said. “We weren’t going to let that be the difference.” Lehman passed for 187 yards and tossed four touchdown passes — three during the second half — as King pulled away for a 27-14 victory over Etiwanda in a CIF Southern Section Division 3 second-round game. The Wolves (12-9) travel to West Covina on Tuesday to face South Hills (24-8) in a quarterfinal game. “We have been a second-half team all season long,” King coach Jamal Hamilton said. “I don’t like starting off that slow, but these girls can find a way to win.” Things started off well for Etiwanda (20-7) on Saturday, as Amaya Ardines intercepted a pass by Marissa Armenta on the game’s second play. But the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the turnover and good field position, as an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal from the 4 brought Etiwanda’s first drive to an end. Lehman took over at quarterback on King’s second series and guided a 76-yard scoring drive. A 6-yard pass on fourth down from Lehman to Makenzie Vargas and a holding penalty on Etiwanda on the play resulted in a first down. On the next play, Lehman connected with Jazmin Brayard for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Etiwanda answered back and drew level 10 minutes later, when Shelby Hong completed three straight passes, including a 7-yard touchdown to Alivia Gordon. King took possession on its 7 with 33 seconds remaining in the first half. The first play was a 4-yard loss, and the next was that safety that put Etiwanda ahead. Etiwanda turned the ball over on downs to start the second half, and King took over on its 28 with 20 minutes left. Lehman took advantage of no pass rush and completed a 28-yard pass to Isabelle Laramie on third-and-long. Lehman later hit Kristen Mason for a 12-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal. It took only Etiwanda about 4 minutes to respond and regain the lead. Hong completed a 28-yard pass to Samantha Garcia on third down to extend the drive, and Hong later found center Ana Cardenas downfield for a 26-yard touchdown that gave the Eagles a 14-12 advantage with about 11 1/2 minutes remaining. The safety was still the difference on the scoreboard at that point in the game. Lehman completed 4 of 7 passes for 43 yards on the ensuing drive and also added a 17-yard run. The key completion was a 19-yarder from Lehman to Laramie on fourth-and-15. Lehman and Laramie connected again for a 16-yard touchdown, and King tacked on a 2-point conversion to go up 20-14 with 7 minutes left. Cassandra Vasquez completed a pass to Cardenas but it was well short of the line to gain. King took advantage of the short field. Lehman capped King’s second-half offensive outburst by firing an 11-yard touchdown to Laramie with a minute to play. “We came together as a team and played like the family we are,” Lehman said. “In the second half, we executed and played the way we are capable of playing.” Laramie did not have a catch in the first half, but she finished the game with six receptions for 88 yards and those two touchdown catches down the stretch. “I wanted to put everything on the line for my team,” Laramie said. “I love this sport so much, and I have a lot of trust in her (Lehman) to get me the ball.” Paige Davis sealed the victory for the Wolves with an interception in the final seconds of the game. Hong completed 9 of 17 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and Cardenas finished with game highs of seven catches for 90 yards for Etiwanda.
