The Brown football team scored 20 unanswered points in the second half, capped by a 29-yard field goal by Christopher Maron as time expired for a huge 23-21 victory over Cornell on Saturday afternoon in front of 7,327 at Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium. The Bears used a 98-yard touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter and took over at their own 14 with less than four minutes remaining to embark on the game-winning drive. Maron was 3-for-4 on field goals and Brown was 3-for-4 on fourth downs on the day. The victory moves Brown to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Ivy League play, one game out of first place with four games remaining. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE Brown ran 104 plays and put up 530 yards of total offense, 349 of which came in the second half. It is the most total yards for Brown since posting 573 in a win at Cornell in 2021. Brown held possession for 12:17 seconds in the fourth quarter, posting 199 yards of offense in the final 15 minutes. The team’s 214 yards on the ground are the most since 2022 against Columbia (229). Senior Stockton Owen led all players with a career-high 79 yards rushing on 18 carries, and freshman Matt Childs added 74 yards on 17 carries. Senior Ben Moseley tallied career-highs with eight catches on eight targets for 100 yards. Chason Barber added four catches for 62 yards and junior Solomon Miller hauled in four passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. Fifth-year Jake Willcox threw for 316 yards on 35-of-49 passing, with 221 yards coming in the second half, and 119 yards on 14-of-17 in the fourth quarter. Eleven different players registered receptions for Brown. Brown’s defense held Cornell scoreless over the final 19-plus minutes and limited the Big Red to just 21 yards of offense in the fourth quarter. Defensively, senior Isaiah Reed had seven tackles (six solo) and two pass breakups. Junior linebacker Sam Smith tied for the team lead with seven tackles. Kalyl Lindsey and Elias Archie also added two pass breakups apiece. HOW IT HAPPENED Brown stopped Cornell on downs on the opening possession of the game at the Brown 17. The Big Red drove 85 yards on nine plays on their ensuing possession in 2:48 and capped it with a 10-yard run by Jameson Wang to take the 7-0 lead. Brown used a 15-play drive that spanned the first and second quarters to get on the board with a 44-yard field goal by Christopher Maron at 14:51 of the second quarter. Brown got into field goal range but missed a 49-yard field goal wide right at the end of the first half. Cornell used an interception near midfield on Brown’s opening possession of the second half, and a separate 80-yard drive to take a 21-3 lead with 4:39 left in the third quarter. Brown roared back beginning late in the third quarter, starting with a 38-yard connection from Willcox to Solomon Miller to make it 21-10 at the 2:20 mark. After getting the ball back against their own goal line in the final minute of the third, Brown drove 98 yards on 12 plays, highlighted by a 14-yard completion to Barber on fourth down, and a third down completion for nine yards to Moseley that put the ball at the one. Qwentin Brown capped the drive with a one-yard run on the direct snap to bring the Bears within 21-17 with 11:34 to go. Brown drove 63 yards after a touchback on the ensuing possession and capped it with a 35-yard field goal from Maron to pull within 21-20 with 5:24 to go. Starting art their own 14 with 3:35 remaining, Brown converted a 4th-and-2 at the Cornell 31-yard line with a key four-yard pass to Najih Rahman to keep the drive alive, setting the stage for Maron who drilled a 29-yarder as time expired.
