INDIANAPOLIS — A fire broke out at a resource center for veterans in downtown Indianapolis Saturday night. According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the 900 block North Pennsylvania Street around 9:30 p.m. on a report of a building fire. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a multi-story structure heavily involved in flames. As of an 11:30 media briefing, crews did not have the fire under control. IFD reported that the fire was emanating from the center of the building. As a result, firefighters set up a perimeter around all four sides of the building and began attacking the fire from multiple angles. IFD estimated that it had more the 100 firefighters and more than 40 vehicles at the scene. Crews have completed a broad sweep of the building, and as of this article's publication, nine individuals remained unaccounted for. Per IFD, the building boasts 39 units that homeless veterans live in. Its occupancy is currently 50 people, and 41 of those individuals have been accounted for. Two of the individuals who have been accounted for were transported to Eskenazi Hospital with slight injuries. As of 12:06 a.m. Saturday, no firefighters had been injured by the blaze. IFD has been on the scene for more than two hours, and the agency has reported that it expects to have crews at the scene for at least a few more hours. IndyGo busses arrived at the scene to assist IFD by getting the building's residents off the street and into a safe, climate-controlled environment. According to IN.gov, HVAF provides housing and other basic services to veterans in central Indiana.
