JASPER COUNTY, Ind. — A person was shot on Interstate 65 in Jasper County on Friday. According to a press release, the Indiana State Police Regional Dispatch Center in Lowell received a 911 call around 8:15 p.m. from a person who claimed he had been shot on I-65 southbound near mile marker 215, which is located by the interstate exit for Rensselaer. The caller told dispatchers a person shot him and continued driving southbound afterward. ISP reported that the victim also provided troopers with an accurate description of the suspect vehicle. ISP's Lafayette district, the Jasper County Sheriff's Department and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office were all notified of the shooting and given a description of the suspect vehicle. Police ultimately located the suspect vehicle on Interstate 65 near mile marker 166, which is located south of Lafayette. When the suspect vehicle was found, law enforcement initiated a traffic stop with it. During the stop, the vehicle's three occupants were detained, and police located a 9mm Glock handgun inside the car. All three individuals were transported to ISP's Lafayette post. Charges were subsequently filed against 19-year-old Dwayne Lumont Johnson Jr. of Country Club Hills, Illinois. Johnson has been charged with: One count of attempted murder — Level 1 Felony One count of aggravated battery — Level 3 Felony Two counts of battery with a deadly weapon — Level 5 Felony One count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon — Level 6 Felony Booking photo of Dwayne Lumont Johnson Jr. courtesy of Indiana State Police. The person Johnson Jr. allegedly shot was transported to a hospital in Lafayette after the incident. The victim was later transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis for additional treatment. According to ISP, the victim is expected to recover from his injuries. The two people found inside the suspect vehicle with Johnson Jr. were released by police and do not currently face any charges.
