"This is probably the most I've seen in a minute," Pu'uhonua O Waimanalo resident Brandon Makaawaawa said. "This is crazy!" Manoa Stream also surged enough to carry away a bench, but the Ala Wai Canal would probably take the title of most-impacted waterway. Exercisers along the Boulevard said their morning walk was disgusting. Flooding, road debris on Hawaii after ‘epic amount of rain’ "I've never seen it this bad, ever," Ala Wai area resident Cierra Campos said. "I think it definitely ruins like the idea of like Hawaii cause people don't, yeah people do not see this version of it, especially like on social media and everything this is the reality of like the people that live here like this is not like, well maintained at all." Others took it upon themselves to try to prevent clogged bridges. "Anything close to the shore that I can get with a bamboo stick and anything big that's probably could cause a blockage over there," Kailua resident Andrew said. "It seems like this should be a, you know, an example, you know, of the State's efforts to keep the waterways clean. Just imagine everyone walking here instead of seeing this, they saw a blue ocean." The debris was so piled up near the McCully Street bridge that it looked like it could be walked over -- area residents said it might just be the worst they have ever seen it. "Be aware that you may need to evacuate or the advice might be to basically stay in higher ground if you're already there." The City said the Ala Wai Canal is a State waterway and KHON2 did not hear back from the Department of Land and Natural Resources about when crews will clean it up. Andrew and his son still found a basketball and football in relatively good condition from a canal that looked like it held a bunch of junk.
