Political prognosticators foresee a close race for President so every vote should be seen as a potential tie breaker. One Jersey City resident opted to cast his vote via a mail-in-ballot but was thwarted going that route.“This really makes no sense and is fairly alarming,” said Asif Khan, whose mail-in ballot was returned him as “not deliverable as addressed. Unable to forward.”“If the post office is seemingly unable to deliver mail-in ballots to the Hudson County Board of Elections in Jersey City,” Kahn said, “then that sort of defeats the entire purpose of mail-in ballots.”Khan added that, “This type of thing definitely has the potential to negatively impact turnout for the upcoming election.”“Rather than trying to mail my ballot in again, I’ll have no choice but to physically visit an official dropbox to drop it off and just hope my vote will be counted.”And, he added, “I’m not sure if by some fluke I’m the only person who’s been affected by this mishap – but even if it is just me as one person – which I doubt—this seems like something someone at the local or state level should look into and fix ASAP with the post office.”Khan emailed City Councilmember James Solomon, who represents Ward E, about his plight and the lawmaker responded that the resident’s plight was “very alarming. Our office will alert both the USPS (U.S. Postal Service), federal representatives and the Board of Elections.”In response to a Jersey City Times inquiry, U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Xavier Hernandez said: “We are aware of a small number of ballot request forms without a destination address. We are working to resolve the issue and are in close communication with the New Jersey Division of Elections to understand why this occurred.”Hernandez added that for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024, “96.4% of all first-class mail in the New Jersey District has arrived within a day of our service standard and is delivered in an average of 2.5 days.”For the first three weeks of this October, he said, “ballot mail performance scores across the nation were very strong: 97.8% of ballot mail was delivered on time when compared with the Postal Service’s service standard and 99.9% was delivered within seven days.”Beginning October 21, Hernandez said, the Postal Service implemented “additional collections, extra deliveries, special sort plans on processing equipment and local handling and transportation of ballots” to “accelerate the delivery of ballots mailed close to Election Day.”Meanwhile, the Hudson County Superintendent of Elections reminded registered Hudson County voters that early in-person voting is an available option from Saturday, October 26, through Sunday, November 3.A list of polling places can be found on the N.J. Division of Elections Voter Information Portal at www.vote.nj.gov.For more information, residents may contact the Hudson County Superintendent of Elections office at 201-369-7740.The post A Mail-in-Ballot Was Marked ‘Return to Sender,’ The Post Office Responds appeared first on Jersey City Times.
