RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A stormwater maintenance crew was in for a spooky surprise when they uncovered a manhole and found a few sets of wings—and eyes—looking up at them. According to Raleigh Water, the bat discovery was reported to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission which came in to assess the situation. That assessment showed the manhole had become a home to nearly 1,000 of them. More than 100 bats are seen huddled together, hanging upside down in a Raleigh stormwater manhole. (Courtesy Raleigh Water) In a post to X, the Raleigh Water department said they will continue to work with NC Wildlife to make sure all of the bats remain "unharmed." There was no indication of whether the bats will be removed completely from the manhole in the mitigation efforts. CBS 17 has reached out to NC Wildlife for more information.
