Class 5A 1. Mountain Vista (9-0) won vs. Rock Canyon, 70-10: Austyn Modrzewski and the Golden Eagles went supernova on Friday night, scoring 63 points by the end of the third quarter en route to their second-highest scoring output of the fall. The senior QB threw seven TD passes a week after breaking the CHSAA career mark — now at 138 and counting — and even caught a scoring pass from running back Jack Blais in a league title-clinching performance. Next week: at Castle View, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1. 2. Cherry Creek (8-1) won vs. Smoky Hill, 55-3: The Bruins ran their Centennial League win streak to nine, with Jayden Fox opening the first half with a touchdown and Ty Goettsche capping it with a scoring grab to take a 48-3 lead into the break. The Creek defense has allowed just 10 points through four league games and is now one win away from its second straight unbeaten run through to a Centennial title. Next week: vs. Grandview, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 3. Valor Christian (8-1) won vs. Fruita Monument, 65-14: The Valor special teams set the tone with a punt block return touchdown and the offense took over after that as the Eagles posted their highest point total of the season. QB Dawson Olk threw four TD passes, three going to junior Cash Spence, and Spence tacked on another on the ground as Valor triggered a running clock in the third quarter. Next week: at Rock Canyon, 7 p.m. Oct. 31. 4. Legend (8-1) won vs. Douglas County, 48-0: Wyoming commit Jaden Lawrence found the end zone three times, Nick Farley added two rushing scores and the Titans shut out an opponent for the fourth time in six games. Beat Regis Jesuit next Friday, and they’ll claim their third league championship in five seasons. Next week: at No. 8 Regis Jesuit, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1. 5. Ralston Valley (8-1) won vs. Denver East, 44-18: The Mustangs topped 40 points for the second time in three weeks and claimed their second 5A Jeffco League championship in three seasons with a dominant showing against the Angels. Next week: at Arvada West, 7 p.m. Oct. 31. 6. Columbine (8-1) won at Denver South, 49-20: Ironman senior James Basinger put on a show at All City Stadium, ripping off four touchdown runs and finding the end zone with a 50-yard pick-6 to help the defending 5A champions rebound from their first loss of the season. Next week: vs. Chatfield, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 7. Pine Creek (5-3) vs. No. 8 Regis Jesuit, 1 p.m. Saturday: The Eagles can go a long way toward locking up a first-round bye in the 5A state playoffs with a home win over the Raiders. While Pine Creek won the last meeting with Regis, the Raiders have won three of the last four. Next week: at Fountain-Fort Carson, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 8. Regis Jesuit (5-3) at No. 7 Pine Creek, 1 p.m. Saturday: The Raiders have won five in a row and need just one more to set up a winner-take-all showdown with Legend for the 5A Southern League title in Week 10. Next week: vs. No. 4 Legend, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1. 9. Erie (7-2) won vs. Legacy, 38-17: Ronin Ward passed for a TD and ran in another in the fourth quarter, and Braylon Toliver busted loose for a long scoring run of his own in the final frame as the Tigers turned a 17-10 lead into a runaway victory. Erie, which has won six straight, is now one victory away from claiming an outright league title in its first season in 5A. Next week: vs. Horizon, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 10. Fairview (9-0) won vs. Fossil Ridge, 29-26: Sophomore QB Ki Ellison found Sabi Ruttgers for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and the Knights survived an upset bid from the SaberCats to clinch their sixth league title in seven seasons. Fossil Ridge twice took the lead on passing touchdowns in the second half only for Fairview to answer. The first came on a 1-yard plunge from senior Jordan Rechel, and the second on Ellison’s hookup with Ruttgers. Next week: at Rocky Mountain, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. Class 4A 1. Pueblo West (9-0) won vs. Falcon, 49-8: The Cyclones scored 42 by halftime to get the clock running and get some much-needed rest for their starters ahead of next Friday’s highly anticipated clash between the top two teams in 4A on the Western Slope. A fourth-quarter touchdown kept Pueblo West from notching its fourth shutout of the season. Next week: at No. 2 Montrose, 6 p.m. Nov. 1. 2. Montrose (9-0) won at Widefield, 63-7: The Red Hawks machine kept churning Friday, as Elijah Womack ran in three TDs, Aidan Grijalva scored rushing and receiving TDs, and Josh Maddox and Chase Mehan tacked on scores of their own as part of a 49-7 first half that triggered a running clock. Now, all that stands between Montrose and its fourth straight league championship is top-ranked Pueblo West. Next week: vs. No. 1 Pueblo West, 6 p.m. Nov. 1. 3. Dakota Ridge (8-1) won vs. Golden, 47-21: The Eagles topped 40 points for the third straight week to roll to their eighth win in a row and sixth league championship in seven seasons. It’s the first under head coach Jeremiah Behrendsen, who succeeded long-time coach Ron Woitalewicz over the offseason. Next week: vs. Bear Creek, 7 p.m. Oct. 31. 4. Broomfield (8-1) won vs. No. 7 Riverdale Ridge, 22-13: CT Worley ran in a pair of touchdowns and Collin Torres found paydirt early in the third quarter as the Eagles jumped ahead 22-0 and held on from there to claim a league title. Riverdale Ridge entered the matchup with six shutouts this fall, and Broomfield’s 22-point burst doubled the Ravens’ points-allowed total for the season. It also happened to be enough to withstand a late Ravens rally. Next week: at Skyline, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 5. Mesa Ridge (6-3) won vs. Doherty, 37-12: The Grizzlies emphatically ended a two-game skid with another explosive offensive showing in the Springs. Mesa Ridge has now topped 30 points in all six of its wins, with its last two losses coming by three and four points to No. 1 Pueblo West and No. 2 Montrose, respectively. Next week: at Falcon, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 6. Palmer Ridge (8-1) won at Rampart, 50-14: The Bears ran roughshod on a Rampart defense that up until Week 9 hadn’t allowed more than 24 points in a single game. Palmer Ridge attempted all of four passes in the rout, instead riding seniors Carson Campbell (nine carries, 227 yards, 4 TDs) and Avier Elvira (16-200, 3 TDs) to a 444-yard night on the ground that should send a message to the rest of 4A. These Bears have no problem getting physical. Next week: vs. Liberty, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 7. Riverdale Ridge (8-1) lost at No. 4 Broomfield, 22-13: A Ravens defense that entered Friday night with three straight shutouts took a little over two quarters to find its footing, and by then it was too late. After going down 22-0 early in the third quarter, Isaiah Medina hooked up with Roman Garcia and Bobby Jackson for TD passes to pull within 22-13 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Ravens missed the ensuing extra point and never got any closer than that. Next week: vs. Grand Junction Central, 7 p.m. Nov. 1. 8. Durango (6-3) won at Liberty, 42-0: The Demons posted their second straight shutout to set up a massive game with Vista Ridge that may well determine one of the final byes in the 4A state playoff bracket. Next week: vs. No. 10 Vista Ridge, 6 p.m. Nov. 1. 9. Frederick (6-3) lost vs. Monarch, 21-20: The Coyotes blocked a potential game-winning field goal in the final minute to hold on for a dramatic league title-clinching win over the Golden Eagles. Monarch’s Chase Gray tied the game with a TD run, and Nate Hart booted the game-winning extra point after that to cap a night that saw him drill a pair of field goals from 40-plus yards. Frederick QB Gavin Ishmael threw a pair of TD passes, one of which went to Sonny Delpizzo, and Delpizzo ran one in for a 20-8 lead in the second quarter. But the Golden Eagles didn’t score again. Next week: at Greeley West, TBD Oct. 31. 10. Vista Ridge (6-3) won vs. Air Academy, 21-7: The Wolves clinched their fifth straight winning season and now have a shot at locking up a top-eight seed in the 4A playoffs with a trip to Southwest Colorado looming next Friday. Next week: at No. 8 Durango, 6 p.m. Nov. 1. Want more sports news? Sign up for the Sports Omelette to get all our analysis on Denver’s teams.
