(KRON) -- A Hayward man is in custody after he was connected to the murder of his father, the Hayward Police Department said. The victim's body was found in a dumpster in Union City. HPD went to the 2000 block of American Avenue at about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday to do a welfare check on a father and son after the 58-year-old father did not show up to work that morning and was not answering his phone, police said. Police searched the area and did not find anyone. However, officers found evidence of what they believed to be a fatal shooting. Man seriously injured in Mission District shooting An HPD investigation pointed to 25-year-old David Sanchez, the victim's son, as the suspect. On Thursday, the Oakland Police Department contacted HPD to say Sanchez was in custody for an unrelated matter. Hayward police then took custody of Sanchez "Oakland PD requested we conduct a welfare check of Sanchez's father based on statements Sanchez made during their investigation," HPD said. Sanchez told Hayward detectives that his father's body was in a dumpster on the 33000 block of Central Avenue in Union City. There have now been 13th homicides in Hayward in 2024.
