LANGHORNE, Pa. — A traditional assumption about the Pennsbury High football team has been if it falls behind late in the fourth quarter it is in trouble because its Ground & Pound offense is not designed to quickly move the ball down the field. In a game that made its season Friday night, Pennsbury proved that theory wrong in clutch style as it posted a thrilling 22-21 victory over arch-rival Neshaminy in front of a huge crowd on Heartbreak Ridge. The winning points came when coach Galen Snyder made the gutsy decision to go for a two-point conversion with :43 showing on the clock. With the victory, Pennbury improved to 5-5 and locked up a District 1 Class 6A playoff berth for the third year in a row. Neshaminy is also in the playoffs with a 6-4 record, although this loss may very well have cost the Redskins a home game in the opening round of the playoffs that start next week. To set the stage for the memorable wild finish, Neshaminy appeared in control when it took a 21-14 lead with 2:51 remaining on a 9-yard run by junior quarterback Mike Eckert. This capped a 71-yard, 12-play drive in which Eckert was outstanding and able to repeatedly move the chains with one big play after another with either his legs or arm. Although it was late, Pennsbury still had hopes with three times out remaining. Aided by one of many offsides penalties against the Redskins, the Falcons went the distance when Jordan Brensinger (16 carries, 96 yards) raced 22 yards around left end and into the end zone. A big play in this drive was a 16-yard Brensinger run down to the Neshaminy 22 yard line. It was here where things got even more interesting as Pennsbury lined up like it was going to go for the two-point conversion. This resulted in Neshaminy calling a time out to get its defense on the field and Pennsbury countering by sending place kicker Angelo Periero onto the field. Right before the timeout was over, Periero raced out on the field, picked up the tee and the Pennsbury offense rushed on the field. Pennsbury then successfully got the two points when standout Walker Murrray went in motion and scored on a jet sweep around left end. “Unwittingly,” replied an honest Snyder when asked if he deliberately baited Neshaminy when he went back and forth on whether to go for two. “At first we thought about a criss-cross (play) and then we thought about a shovel pass to Walker. “We hadn’t run the jet sweep for a while but we finally decided to with it. We ran it a few times in practice and it looked pretty good.” An excessive celebration call against Pennsbury helped give the Redskins hope with :38 seconds to go and it did manage to reach the Falcon 35 yard line. But on the final play of the game, Neshaminy kicker Kaden Nicastro put a good charge into the ball, but his 52-yard field goal attempt came up short. This capped a back and forth game in which neither team was able to take command. Neshaminy started with a 64-yard drive to start the game and a 1-yard touchdown run by Eckert. Pennsbury drew even in the second quarter when it got its running game cranked up and scored on a 2-yard run by Kaiden Brown. Pennsbury looked like it might take the lead right before the half when it reached the Neshaminy 1 yard line. But two runs came up short and Pennsbury had an illegal procedure penalty call as the Neshaminy band blared away while lined up near the end zone to get ready for its half-time show. In the third quarter, Neshaminy scored on a 40-yard pass by Eckert to Lucas Stewart before Pennsbury came back again on a 17-yard run by Brensinger. A key to the Pennsbury victory was a strong game by its secondary, which had struggled in some of the team’s earlier games.  Members of that group include Henry Garlits, Antonio Pelham, Jake Parada, Shawn Beatty and Ray Vereen, who also had big kickoff return. With the win, Pennsbury beat Neshaminy for the third time in a row and extended its lead in a series that dates back to 1930. Pennsbury (5-5) 0 7 7 8 – 22 Neshaminy (6-4) 7 0 7 7 – 21 N-Eckert 1 run (Nicastro kick) P-Brown 1 run (Pereira kick) N-Stewart 40 pass from Eckert (Nicastro kick) P-Brensinger 17 run (Pereira kick) N-Eckert 9 run (Nicastro kick) P-Brensinger 22 run (Murray run)
