TRENTON — All Zavonn Minney saw was green turf and wide open space. Minney sprinted 38 yards to the end zone early in the fourth quarter for the go-ahead score and the Trenton High football team claimed at least a share of the WJFL Valley Division title by beating injury-plagued Robbinsville, 17-13, on Friday night at Bill Harvin Memorial Stadium. “The goal was just to do better than last season,” said Minney, who was one of the seniors honored before the game. “Last season we had a very tough time getting wins, but this season we got a group of guys with chemistry. With the work we put in throughout the summer and the offseason we were ready to get some wins.” The Tornadoes (5-4, 4-1 WJFL Valley) snapped a three-game skid and assured themselves of finishing with at least a .500 record depending on whether they play a crossover game or not. Trenton hasn’t finished a full season at .500 since a 5-5 record in 2018 — it went 3-2 in the 2020 Covid-impacted campaign — and last finished over .500 in 2017. Even though it won’t make the playoffs, Trenton can still win the Valley title outright if Princeton loses to West Windsor on Saturday. “We just wanted to take one game at a time,” coach Chris Franco said. “We had success and goals change as you have success. This was one of the goals we set.” Keyshawn Warthen, playing running back instead of quarterback, ran for 187 yards on 23 carries in his final home game. Keith Williams threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Sincere Williams late in the second quarter and Elmer Godoy connected on a 35-yard field goal to make up the Tornadoes’ scoring. Missing several starters due to injury, Robbinsville (2-7, 2-3 WJFL Valley) came out running gadget players and mis-direction. It worked when Noah Schwartz threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Alex Giordano on a halfback pass for a 6-0 lead. The TD was set up by Timonthy Cabral’s interception and 27-yard return. When Schwartz joined the injured list in the second quarter, the Ravens found themselves without anybody to run the ball and had quarterback Gavin Yablonowitz throw in the second half. Yablonowitz completed 15-of-32 passes for 151 yards, with 14 of those completions coming in the second half. It looked like the Ravens may stay in the hunt for a division title — there was a chaotic four-way tie for first in play at the beginning of the night — when Yablonowitz connected with Will Raftery for a 29-yard touchdown for a 13-10 lead with 9:15 left in the third. That’s where the score stayed until Minney took a toss around the right end and all the way to the house. “I saw nothing but grass,” Minney said with a laugh. “As soon as I cut back, I turned on the speed.” Minney hopes this senior class has set the bar for the younger players. “This is the first time Trenton High has had this many wins in a long time,” Minney said. “The guys got to put in the work, but they can outrun us next season.” Robbinsville (2-7) 0 6 7 0 — 13 Trenton (5-4) 0 10 0 7 — 17 R- Giordano 51 pass from N.
