SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — FEMA is deployed in nine locations across the state helping families recover after Hurricanes Debby and Helene. "We're here as long as we see a need,” said Debra Young a spokesperson with FEMA. “With our disaster recovery centers, they stay open as long as people are still coming in." At any of the disaster recovery center, families can get one-on-one help from FEMA workers who will point them towards the right resources that they need. They're awarding money for property loss or damage, including food loss for some that experienced power outages. "Some people are saying they received assistance for that and then their neighbor didn't receive assistance for it, so it really depends on your individual application and the way you answer the questions in the application,” said Young. FEMA Disaster Recovery Center opening in Hampton County Debra Young with FEMA said that they've given out over $187-million dollars to help with both storms in Georgia. She said there isn't a timeline for how long applications take to process but that you should call or visit one of their centers if you're worried. "If you feel like you haven't heard back from us, always keep in touch with us,” said Young.Young said the most common mistake in an application is not providing enough information, like your insurance or documentation of the damage. There are Disaster Survivor Assistants out now knocking on doors to bring help to people. Young said that if you see one, always ask for a badge to avoid any scammers. There are disaster recovery centers in Chatham, Liberty, Toombs, Appling and Hampton Counties. You can find your nearest center on FEMA's website.
