STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — Bulloch County and City of Statesboro leaders announced they will be observing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. "Leaving a domestic violence situation is the most dangerous time in someone's life,” said Kim Billings, director of legal services and public relations at Safe Haven. Safe Haven is a resource center in Statesboro for those experiencing domestic violence. Billings said they get at least 20 calls every day from people in crisis. "Lots of different relationships can be impacted by domestic violence and that's what we enjoy about our jobs is being able to help anybody that's going through it,” said Billings. She said that domestic violence comes in many forms, saying one of every four women, one of every seven men and one of every three teens experiences domestic violence. "There's a lot of stigma thinking it's just a female that can be affected by domestic violence, but domestic violence can be husbands-wives, boyfriends-girlfriends,” said Billings. “It can be same sex relationships, it can be a mother-daughter, father-son, brother-sister. It can be somebody that's being stalked by someone." FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers open for one-on-one help Just last year, their center served 784 people. Billings said the community has a duty - if you see something say something. "It's really important that if someone tells you they're being abused that you believe them,” said Billings. "Know what is out there for someone,” said Billings. "Know your local domestic violence organizations. Know that hotline, that crisis line. Know where you can refer them to. Call law enforcement. Be very careful intervening but refer them to the appropriate agencies, and listen - don't judge. Be there for that person." They offer a 24-hour crisis hotline. They can also go with you to court if you need and help you find a new place to stay.
