MEMPHIS, Tenn. — No parent, no game. The new rule for kids attending Southwind High's football games did not stop families Friday night as the Southwind Jaguars hosted their last home game before the playoffs. "We want to make sure going forward that we are safe, that we provide an environment that keeps everybody safe and enjoyable. We want families to come out together," Southwind Principal John Bush said. Parents required to attend athletic events with high school students following fights Bush said he was compelled to make the change after multiple fights broke out at last week's game. The game was suspended as a result. In a letter to Southwind, the TSSAA said that if Bush had not taken this preventive measure, the school could have lost its privilege of hosting post-season events, like home playoff games. After being in the middle of the chaos last week, parents like Keta Cooley say the changes had to be made. "It was just a lot going on and I was very disappointed," Cooley said. "My son is in the band. He was very disappointed." Despite the rule change parents and students still came out to support. The home team of the Southwind Jaguars had higher attendance than that of Kirby, as you see barely anyone in the stands for their side. Parents say, even with a lower attendance rate they still stand behind the new rules. "It should've been like that," parent Veronica Mays said. "You know how your child act when they at home so you know they ain't gone act right out in public, so he had to do what he had to do for his school." 📡 See more breaking news, local news and weather from WREG.com for Memphis and the Mid-South. 📧 Sign up for WREG newsletters and have the latest top stories sent right to your inbox. Cooley said most students were not involved in last week's brawl, but the few who were could have done more harm than just cancel a game. "Maybe a lot of parents do work so they can't be here with their kids and I understand that, but I just want everybody to be safe," she said. Cooley had a message for students who may be tempted to start trouble again. "Just have fun, that's what it's all about. You want to remember homecoming, you want to remember your high school experience, so just come out and just have fun."
