HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Family, friends and government officials throughout the state celebrated the life and work of Hawaiʻi Island Representative Mark Nakashima at the State Capitol. Check out what's going on around the nation on our National News page Nakashima passed suddenly in July at 61 years old and was a dedicated servant representing Hāmākua, a portion of Hilo and Kaūmana. He was known for his efforts to create connections between Hawaiʻi Island schools and the communities around them. Governor orders flags to half-staff to honor passing of Hawai’i state official Officials added he was a "gentle yet fierce" advocate for Hawaiʻi Island residents who was dedicated to education and commitment to sustainable energy. "Mark was above all else a teacher," said Governor Josh Green M.D. "He made his mark on young people. He shaped young minds and encouraged them to be critical thinkers and instilled Hawaiʻi's values of responsibility and citizenship in them." Nakashima was also known from his days studying at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa where he earned his B.Ed. Degree and a professional diploma in education with an emphasis in political science. According to Senate President Ronald D.
