Former President Barack Obama and Democrats are hoping his speech to voters in Charlotte will help flip the Tarheel State blue. Donald Trump won the state of North Carolina in the 2020 presidential election. With 16 electoral votes on the line, North Carolina is a must win state in the presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris is leaning on Obama to help push the campaign past the finish line. “Everything right now that’s not working [Donald Trump and JD Vance] are quick to say Kamala you’ve been vice president for four years, wasn’t Donald Trump president for 4 years,” Obama asked. In a 40 minute speech, Obama talked about Trump’s character, policy and agenda. “We do not need a president who will make problems worse just to make his politics better,” Obama said “We need a president who actually cares about solving problems.” Obama says Trump’s rhetoric is dangerous to democracy and some voters agree. “Get rid of the hate and the lack of decency in this country and bring everybody back together,” David Goodrum, North Carolina voter said. “I feel like Kamala is the one that can do it. I don’t feel like her opponent is anywhere close to doing it.” Voters also say they believe Harris will protect women’s healthcare. “I am very sure that reproductive rights are important for women in America today, and I don’t feel like the other party is going to represent that,” Lorena Barklage, North Carolina voter said. “We need to make sure that other little girls get to have their mothers, instead of the idea of a baby that may not come to fruition.” If elected as president, Harris has also proposed economic support for small businesses and first time homebuyers. “As a young Black male in the United States, I would love to and aspire to own a home, and her $25,000 for down payment for new first time home buyers is something that really resonated with me,” Justin Hines, North Carolina voter said. In his pitch to voters, Obama said Trump would make the rich richer while making others suffer. “Donald Trump’s plan shockingly is to give another massive tax cut to billionaires and big corporations,” Obama said. Obama also spoke against Trump’s plan for mass deportation. “We have real issues at the border. We are a nation of immigrants,” Obama said. “We have to make sure the system works the way that it’s supposed to that it’s orderly, that it’s safe, that it’s fair.” Obama also encouraged voters to pay attention to state races like governor and superintendent of public instruction. Republican Candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction Michelle Murrow once tweeted that Obama should be executed by a firing squad.
