On Oct. 3, Art4SKARTS returned for the seventh year supporting arts and artists in the local region.’ According to organizers, a large crowd gathered at Hartlot Happening, which is co-owned by Keith Traub and Katie North Peck. At the venue more than 100 pieces of art were on display. All pieces had been juried by Davana Robedee and Deirdre Aureden. The Art4SKARTS show has been a long running tradition for the Skaneateles Art Council, also known as SKARTS. The show is an important fundraiser that helps support the organization’s mission of supporting artists and the arts in the area in and around Skaneateles, funding grant opportunities. This fund awards grants of up to $1,000 to local artists and organizations annually. Since 2006 SKARTS has issued over $110,000 for ongoing programs throughout Skaneateles and surrounding areas. This year’s featured artist was Stacia Landsberg, a well-known photographer in the Skaneateles community for more than 20 years. The show was dedicated in memory of Shirley Penman. “For many years, Stacia has dedicated herself to documenting people, places and events in the area through the lens of her camera,” the board told the Press-Observer. The work of putting this show and fundraiser together began months ago when SKARTS put out the call for submissions. From painters to sculptors to photographers to ceramics and those that use glass and metal to express their creativity, and everything in between, SKARTS welcomed all artists to share their work for consideration. As SKARTS prepared, organizers hoped to get a good selection of pieces and showcase as much local talent as possible. “We feel it is important to share the art in the community to celebrate and promote peace,” the board told the Press-Observer. “Also, it is the opportunity to broaden artistic experiences and to bring a therapeutic experience for the artist as well as the viewer.” Selecting artists and works that will be featured in the show was no easy task with many artists eager to take part in the show. “As artists, having an event to show our work and additionally having it be for a worthy cause, creates enthusiasm,” Laurel Moranz, president of the SKARTS board, said in 2022. “This event showcases our local talent. SKARTS has a name recognition for showcasing local talent.” With years of success and support from both artists and the art-loving community, Moranz said there are a number of factors at play that contribute to the success of the show. “The event has been successful in the past, I believe, since people enjoy seeing the various artworks, and have the opportunity to purchase them and support the cause of SKARTS,” she said. “The work of many talented artists in the community within a 15 miles radius of Skaneateles creates a varied and interesting exhibition.” At the show more than 30 pieces were sold. “Through the purchase of tickets, art works and donations the mission of Art4SKARTS to support local artists and organizations will continue,” SKARTS shared in a press release. “Annual grants of up to $1000 will be once again awarded in 2025 following an application process.” At the show refreshments were provided by Good Eats and Sips, Buttonwood Grove Winery and professionally made deserts by Elisabeth Fournier, one of SKARTS’ board members. Carrie Hanno and Denise Neacosia played live music. According to SKARTS the show was a success, drawing a large crowd and positive feedback from guests and artists alike.
