NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - A Hampshire Superior Court jury has reached a split decision in the case of Steven J. Malloy, who was tried for the 2021 shooting death of 39-year-old Joseph R. Filio of Pittsfield. Trial to begin in 2021 Northampton murder case Mally, 35, was acquitted of first-degree murder but found guilty of illegal firearm possession. Jurors deliberated for about five hours on Thursday and Friday before delivering their verdict. The jury cleared Malloy of the murder charge but convicted him of unlawfully possessing a firearm.  Following the verdict, Judge James Manitsas ordered Malloy held on $10,000 bail until sentencing for the firearm conviction. The case is scheduled for a status hearing on November 15. Malloy’s criminal record could lead to an enhanced sentence, with the illegal firearm conviction carrying a potential prison term of up to 15 years. A trial addressing the specifics of his criminal record, which could impact the final sentence, will take place at a later date before a separate jury.
