Horror movies have existed since about 1886 when Georges Melies, a French filmmaker, created a short film called “Le Manoir du Diable” or The Haunted Castle. The film was only three minutes long and included witches, demons, and special effects that created supernatural occurrences.
Horror films have been a huge part of movie culture with classic and influential works that continue to captivate audiences. The goal is to elicit strong emotional responses from the viewer, including fear and anxiety to shock and disgust.
A study conducted by NoDepositRewards.org analyzed Google searches from September 2023 to September 2024 of the most popular Halloween movies. The data used was from Google Keyword Planner based on a list of movies from Vudu, Reader’s Digest, and Rotten Tomatoes
The movie that was most searched in Massachusetts was the iconic 1988 movie, Beetlejuice. It had an average of 32,633 searches a month. With its sequel released in theaters last month, the original soared in popularity on Netflix's top charts.
With just over half the searches, the 2022 horror film Talk to Me is the second most Googled Halloween movie. The number of searches averaged 16,649 a month. Due to its success by Australian YouTube directors Michael and Danny Philippou (RackaRacka), a sequel was announced.

"These findings give us an indication of what Americans will be watching this Halloween season. While frightening horror titles become such a focus during the month of October, less intense, comedic films like Beetlejuice and Scary Movie remain popular across the country. It will be interesting to monitor the public's interest in Beetlejuice over the coming months and year to see whether it remains one of the nation's most searched-for Halloween movies after the buzz around its long-awaited sequel dies down," said Mason Jones from NoDepositRewards.org.
