MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Leaders say they have a plan to create a safer and healthier Raleigh, Nutbush and North Shelby County. Friday morning, District 6 Shelby County Commissioner Charlie Caswell was flanked by community members he calls stakeholders in his plan, Wraparound District 6. "Our three main focus is around public safety, public education and public health," Caswell said. "What resources do we have in our community that's on the ground that we can begin to help impact public safety?" The plan is the result of 40 community meetings to gauge safety and health concerns of Raleigh, Nutbush and unincorporated North Shelby County. Crime was at the top of concerns. "We still need to get to a place where people can pump gas at night without looking ovr their shoulder, where they can drive on the interstate without thinking they're in a NASCAR speedway, right?" said Congressman Steve Cohen at the event. "And that's what we're here about and we're all working together for that." Wraparound District 6 focuses on what Caswell call the "7 P's": PARENTS PASTORS PRINCIPALS POLICE POLITICIANS PROPRIETORS PARTNERS The plan is to establish Resiliency Hubs in District 6, locations like The Dwelling Place Church, already providing essential programs for youth in Raleigh. "They come from broken places," Pastor Leon Jones said, "and so that's what we're trying to do, show them that we believe in them and we believe that they can do better than what society says they're gonna do." The initiative begins with $600,000 in seed funding from Commissioner Caswell with additional public and private funding being sought, according to a news release. "We just want to make sure we got a safe place to be but at the same time we want accountability," Patrick Epps said. The three-year initiative will also provide job training, mental health support and other resources.
