Officials say car mechanical failure caused wildfires in East Feliciana Parish
Oct 25, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Fire officials say a motor vehicle likely caused the wildfires reported in East Feliciana Parish on Oct. 22.
Multiple wildfires broke out along Highway 67 in Clinton. Firefighters from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, local fire departments and Mississippi fire crews worked to contain the fires.
According to the department, LDAF agents and the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office identified the cause as a vehicle with a mechanical failure that unintentionally sparked the fires.
"The state is at a heightened risk of wildfires due to recent prolonged dry conditions, which cause vegetation to be highly flammable,” said LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain, DVM. “Please avoid activities that cause open flames or sparks. Properly discard cigarettes, avoid parking on dry grass, and check trailers for dragging chains. Even a small spark can ignite a large blaze that endangers homes, wildlife, and lives.”
LDAF’s Office of Forestry responds to wildfires at any hour and throughout the state. In the event of an emergency, call the LDAF 24-Hour Emergency Hotline at 1-855-452-5323 or dial 911.
