ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — In honor of National Pedestrian Safety Month, Monroe County is launching a first-of-its-kind traffic initiative Friday morning. The County announced its first-ever Community Traffic Safety Team. The team will provide residents with professionals who will review and address traffic concerns. A new online portal will be launched and a new hotline can be called for concerns. That number is (585)-753-3200. New Yorkers warned of a rise in online car scams Starting next year, the new team will begin quarterly meetings to examine crash data, review feedback, and evaluate the design of roads, sidewalks, and more. It will also address current hazards and make proactive recommendations to prevent future tragedies. County Executive Adam Bello said 47 lives are lost every year on Monroe County roadways and over 5,000 people are injured in traffic crashes. He stresses community input is key to improving road safety. "People who live in our neighborhoods across the county know their neighborhoods best. You know the areas where speeding is a problem, you know where crosswalks are lacking, and where intersections just simply feel unsafe. The information and data you share will inform our proactive measures to improve infrastructure, road, and pedestrian safety," said Bello. Furthermore, the county is continuing to work on school bus safety near the end of School Bus Safety Week. Bello says this team will also help prevent drivers from passing stopped school buses.
