After 20 years of operating spots across Massachusetts, Life Alive Organic Cafe is opening its first location outside of the Bay State by the end of 2024 (2301 M St. NW). The West End cafe will focus on using seasonal ingredients in warm grain bowls, salads, ramen-style noodle dishes, and acai bowls. The new cafe will include bright colors, eclectic art, and cozy spots where you can escape from the work day or keep your nose to the grindstone, with free Wi-Fi and lots of outlets. The growing vegetarian restaurant chain has expanded to 10 locations already, in part due to the guidance of Ron Shaich, who founded Panera and Au Bon Pain, and is now investing in several Boston-based restaurants, including Life Alive and Tatte Bakery & Cafe. The Logan Circle restaurant is celebrating five years of hyper local, seasonal menus by bringing back the chef’s choice menu, previously known as the “Family Meal” prix fixe, that was in place when the first location of Nina May opened in 2019. For one week, from November 1-8, diners can opt in for the experience of having chef and owner Colin McClimans send out dishes he’s chosen until you’re ready to ask for dessert. Lots of regulars’ favorite dishes will make an appearance, including onion rings with smoked carrot mustard, roasted spaghetti squash and molasses bread, and crispy Maryland porchetta. 1337 11th St NW Churchkey celebrates 15 years with five anniversary beer collaborations Churchkey The busy bar with 55 drafts and casks. This Saturday, ale and lager aficionados can flock to Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s Churchkey to celebrate the beer-obsessed spot with five anniversary brews, made in collaboration with different breweries. The exclusive craft beers will include local Bluejacket and New Hampshire-based Schilling Beer’s collaboration on a Czech pale lager, a hazy double IPA by Monkish Brewing, a blend of farmhouse ales called CK15 by Oxbow Brewing, a dry-hopped American IPA by Sierra Nevada, and a bourbon and apple brandy imperial stout by The Veil. All of the beers will be on draft and most will also be available to take home, in bottles and cans. 1337 14th St NW Pappe hosts Fair Trade Month dinner and panel To highlight the importance of fair trade practices, Logan Circle’s Pappe and Just Ice Tea, a national brand from the same team as PLNT Burger, will be holding a cocktail hour, family-style meal, and panel discussion on October 29. Guests can start socializing and sipping fair trade organic wines, Just Ice Tea craft cocktails, beer, and Pappe’s signature drinks at 5:30 p.m., before sitting down for a vegetation feast by the Indian restaurant’s chef, Sanjay Mandhaiya. During the meal, a live panel discussion will take place with James Beard Award-winning restaurateur Nora Pouillo and Sarela Herrada, co-founder of a global sustainable food company called SIMPLi. The panel discussion will be moderated by food journalist Anna Spiegel of Axios and tickets ($120) are available to purchase on Resy. Wiseguy NY Pizza/Facebook A lineup of the classic and innovative pies at Wiseguys. &pizza competitor honors Marion Barry after pizza knots controversy Thompson Restaurant’s Wiseguy Pizza announced on Wednesday that the chain would be donating a portion of proceeds from all eight location to the Marion Barry Jr. Legacy Foundation during November. The donations are the chain’s response to &pizza’s controversial “Marion Berry Knots,” which were clearly themed around former mayor Marion Barry’s drug arrest and have been getting D.C. community pushback (even after being taken off the menu). Thompson Restaurant’s board president, Warren Thompson, said in a release that he knew Marion Barry personally and it was “deeply inappropriate to use his name and legacy in such a disrespectful manner.”
