SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Hundreds of San Francisco Superior Court employees may go on strike for a second time next week if contract negotiations fall apart. Oh Thursday, about 200 court clerks staged a one-day strike and brought trials to a halt. Journalists from Bay Area news stations, "Dateline," and the Daily Mail have been inside the San Francisco Hall of Justice for more than two weeks listening to testimony for the Bob Lee murder trial. The high-profile trial was also forced to suspend while strikers picketed on courthouse steps. Hearings on matters ranging from felonies to divorce proceedings were impacted. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins even joined the picket line to show solidarity with clerks. Jenkins wrote, "Court clerks play a critical role in ensuring that operations at the Hall of Justice (and) the other court houses in the city function smoothly to ensure justice for victims of crime. Courthouse managers need to come back to the table (and) negotiate in good faith." An SEIU 1021 spokesperson told KRON4 on Friday, "Yesterday's strike was a one-day strike for now. They are going back to contract negotiations today. If they don't see management making enough progress on their very serious concerns today, they could call for another strike as soon as early next week." Clerks represented by union SEIU 1021 voted by over 99 percent on October 10 to approve staging the strike. The clerks said their labor contract expired nearly a month ago. SEIU 1021 leaders said staffing and training issues led to more than 70 misdemeanor criminal cases being dismissed, and "continue to cause unnecessary delays and errors that can be very consequential to people’s lives." Court managers refuse to seriously address root causes of a massive case backlog, union leaders claim. The purpose of striking is to catch the public’s attention about "the court’s mismanagement and violations of both labor law and the U.S. Constitution," SEIU 1021 wrote.
