What a difference a week made for Ryan Gill. The College of New Jersey wide receiver was sidelined with an injury when the Lions fell to Rowan, but triumphantly returned against Kean last Saturday and hauled in three touchdown passes. “It was rough sitting on the sidelines for the Rowan game,’’ stated Gill. “This week I prepared like it was just another game and went out and played as hard as I could and it happened to be one of my better games of the season.’’ This week Gill and the Lions (4-2, 2-1 NJAC) head to Gettysburg (2-4, 1-2 Centennial) for a 1 p.m. showdown in what is TCNJ’s last non-conference game of the season. A team that came into the Kean game not as banged up as the previous week. “It’s health and depth in Division III,’’ said TCNJ coach Eric Jendryaszek. “What showed up against Kean was we got healthy. We got some guys back and Ryan Gill had a coming out party.’’ While Gill had five catches for 107 yards and three first-half touchdowns on his way to the conference’s Offense Player of the Week, those numbers pale in comparison to what he was able to do last year against Gettysburg when he grabbed 10 balls for 152 yards. It was clear then that Gill was a very gifted wideout. He finished the year with a team-high 45 catches for 636 yards, and although he has been limited to 15 catches for 296 yards this season because of the injury he still has a team-best six touchdown catches. “I came into this season wanting to continue to be a top receiver,’’ said Gill, a junior from Kearny. “We have a lot of guys that can make plays here. It’s great having Malin (Jasinski) and Thomas (Burke) by my side as one of us is going to make a play. It’s hard to keep up with all of us.’’ Jasinski and Burke are fifth-year players and have 55 and 24 reception, respectively. “We are coming into this game feeling pretty good,’’ said Gill. “Our mindset this year has been to take things week-to-week and we’re not too focused on what’s ahead. We just want to stay in the moment. We have to execute every day and stay together as one team through the ups and downs.’’ Interim coach Eric Jendryaszek is in his eighth year with the program and has seen it grow into one with greater expectations. “The last two, three years the team has looked different and our expectations have been different,’’ said Jendryaszek. “We want to stress upon the guys that everything will take care of itself and just focus on what’s in front.’’ Gill played both football and basketball in high school, although he didn’t join the football team until his junior season. “I never expected playing football to happen,’’ admitted Gill. “I didn’t pick it up in high school until my junior year and it turned out to be something I took all the way into college.’’ Gill still a pretty good basketball player, but an even better college wide receiver. TCNJ Gameday WHO: The College of New Jersey (4-2, 2-1 NJAC) at Gettysburg (2-4, 1-2 Centennial) WHEN: 1 p.m. on Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium in Gettysburg COACHES: TCNJ’s Eric Jendryaszek (4-2, 1st season ) and Maurice Banks (6-30, 5th season) SERIES: TCNJ leads series 1-0 having won 30-13 in 2023. LAST WEEK: The Lions defeated Kean, 48-7; and Gettysburg lost to Muhlenberg SIGNIFICANCE: Last Non-conference game of the season TCNJ SCOUTING REPORT: It was a solid win for the Lions last week at Kean in all phases of the game and this week they hit the road for the final non-conference game of the season. The TCNJ passing attack is ranked third in the nation with 335.2 yards a game. Quarterback Trevor Bopp is second in the nation in passing yards for game and he has a talented group of receivers led by Malin Jasinski (3rd in the nation in receiving yards), Thomas Burke and Ryan Gill, who returned from an injury and had game against Kean. The TCNJ offense needs to come out and grab an early lead and take control early. A week ago, it was greatly complimented by the defense and it needs that again because Gettysburg can put points on the board. The defense has allowed just 22.7 points a game, but it’s been a bend and not break defense allowing a league most 398.7 yards a game. It will need to limit the Gettysburg chances and create some turnovers. GETTYSBURG SCOUTING REPORT: The Bullets quarterback Rocco Abdinoor was the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week after racking up 504 yards of total offense, including 352 yards through the air. He’ll be ready for the Lions with a bunch of new-found confidence. This is a team that is somewhat better than their record would indicate as they average 32.2 points a game and give up 40. Nate DeLorenzo and Brian Smith lead the defense with 42 tackles each. And DeLorenzo has three fumble recoveries. Sweden’s Walle Harwigsson Lundblad is the top receiver with 26 catches and five touchdowns. Despite having lost the last two weeks the Bullets can be an explosive offensive team if you let them. KEY MATCHUP: TCNJ defense containing the Bullets offense. EXTRA POINTS: TCNJ’s Ryan Gill was the NJAC’s Offensive Player of the Week and Justin Kurc was the Defensive Player of the Week. …Kurc is fourth in the nation in interceptions per game and passed defended. …The NJAC’s Salisbury is ranked No. 7 in the AFCA poll and No. 6 in D3football.com. …The Lions are third in the nation in fumble recoveries. …Gettysburg has lost to a pair of NJAC schools, Montclair State (27-26) and Christopher Newport (54-37). …Malin Jasinski has 55 receptions on the season and that’s 31 more than Newport’s Colin Hart, who is second in the conference with 24. …TCNJ and Salisbury are the only NJAC teams with over .500 records. …Their wins have come over a pair of one-win teams, Juniata and McDaniel. …Local players on Gettysburg roster; Tim McKeown (Hopewell Valley), Allen Patterson (Hopewell Valley), Arthur Stubbs (Lawrence), Nick Karpovich (Hopewell Valley), Patrick McAuliffe (Hamilton West). …Other NJAC games this week, William Paterson (1-5, 0-2 NJAC) at Montclair State (2-4, 0-3 NJAC), Rowan (3-3, 1-1) at No. 7 Salisbury(6-0, 3-0 NJAC) and Christopher Newport (3-3, 1-1 NJAC) at Kean (2-4, 2-1 NJAC). …TCNJ is home to Salisbury next week at 2 p.m. PREDICTION: TCNJ 37, Gettysburg 21
