HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- At first glance, Amare Joseph might look like your average fifth-grader, but when he's on stage with some thumping speakers and a controller, he turns into DJ Amare. In his last year at Greenwood Elementary School in Henrico County, Amare brings the beats to his school's pep rallies. “It feels nice because everybody knows the music and it’s just a vibe," Amare said.   And his classmates agree. They described him as "creative," "fantastic" and "energetic." "He's always, like, having fun and he's always energetic," fifth-grader Bryce Stein said. "It makes everybody else feel like they belong and makes them feel like they [can] have a good time."  Greenwood Elementary teacher LeYuani Wilson said she gets emotional watching Amare perform. "'Heartbeat' describes his music, it describes him," Wilson said. "It describes what he means to this school. He's the underlying heartbeat of our school." It wasn’t until a couple of years ago when Amare DJ'd at the school talent show that people discovered his gift. After that, Greenwood Elementary principal Ryan Stein asked him to perform in the hallway, at school events, and, of course, during pep rallies. "They see the great in kids and they encourage them," Amare's mom, Samantha Joseph, said.    Joseph said Amare gravitated toward music before he could walk or talk. Amare’s dad had a DJ controller board, and he would mimic the movements he made and the buttons he pressed. Now, he’s in the school’s drum line and practices DJing every day. "It feels unbelievable," she said. "And although I see it often, every time it feels like a new experience." And it’s not just at Greenwood Elementary that Amare DJs. He’s performed at basketball tournaments, proms, high school pep rallies and family gatherings. His mom said he's DJ'd 57 events in the last two years. "Every time there's an event, [they ask] 'Can Amare DJ for us?'" Joseph said. Wilson taught Amare when he was a second grader, and said Greenwood Elementary tries to give its students as much opportunity to try new things as possible, and that she's seen that first-hand with Amare. "When he was in second grade, you would've never known that he had this in him," she said. "Thanks to his parents. They have really fostered this love in him." Amare hopes to become a professional DJ one day, and perform for big stars like Beyonce.
