PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — The Slater Park Haunted Tunnel is wrapping up its 22nd year with a range of spooky festivities for the community of Pawtucket. “This is a fundraising effort for Dagget Farm that started 22 years ago,” said Pawtucket Director of Parks and Recreation, John Blais. “And you know since then, with the addition of having youth volunteers, many of them need it for community service for their school or college, then we have some adults who are looking to have a good time,” said Blais. “So you’re bringing the community together, and then you’re giving the community an attraction to come to for Halloween. So overall, it’s a win-win situation,” he said. Every year, the event draws thousands of people to check out the 200 foot tunnel. The event costs $10 dollars, and all of the actors involved are volunteers. “This is my first year. We just moved from New Jersey a year ago, so this was like the first opportunity we had to kind of get to know the community,” said Angelica Agostini, a scare actor. “So it’s pretty exciting because I’m a very shy person and I’ve opened up very quickly. I’m excited and I want to do it again next year,” she said. “My parents used to take me here when it was a zoo. So I’m all for nostalgia, my dad and I, we used to be big Halloween buffs and so I came and found this. And it’s great because, with all the teens and the volunteers, they build this themselves,” said Shannon Washburn, who participates with her daughter. Blaise says none of this happens without the volunteer team. In his fifteen years with the program, he’s seen that grow every year. “They’re the greatest part of all of this really. Without them, we have nothing and when they put forth the effort that they do put in – like this year has been a fantastic year. So we’ve been pretty lucky with that,” said Blais. The tunnel opens up on Fridays and Saturdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., an this is the final weekend it’ll open before the team starts getting ready for next year.
