MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Halloween is less than a week away. However, this weekend some families will get a head start on the frightful fun. Before you send your kids out in cute costumes, leaders with Shelby County Sheriff’s Office say make sure you and your family are safe. “Make sure you know where your children are going. Make sure you accompany them, especially our younger children, and just watch the roadways," said Assistant Chief Derek Mills. Another way to be safe is to always be vigilant. 📡 See more breaking news, local news and weather from WREG.com for Memphis and the Mid-South. 📧 Sign up for WREG newsletters and have the latest top stories sent right to your inbox. "Keep your head on a swivel and make sure you know what’s going on," said Mills. "It’s going to be right at the crust of darkness, so when you are out there, areas of the county don’t always have street lights. Just make sure you wear something that you can be seen in and watch the cars on the road.” Halloween is all about costumes, candy, and fun, but it can be dangerous.  To help you make sure everyone has a great time, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is also hosting its own Halloween event — Trunk or Treat.  “We welcome anybody in the public to come out. We have our indoor facility and outside we have plenty of candy. Walmart has donated a truck of candy so please come out and help us get rid of some of this," Mills said. There is an event on Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the substation in Arlington located at 11670 Memphis-Arlington Road.
