Is it flu season or just fall allergies? How to tell the difference
Oct 25, 2024
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — If you’re experiencing sniffles, sneezing, or a runny nose this season, it could be the flu or simply fall allergies. Dr. Caitlyn Iddings provides insight into distinguishing between the two and suggests easy remedies for relieving symptoms.
Dr. Iddings explains that fall allergies often bring on symptoms like watery eyes, a runny nose, an itchy throat, and sneezing. While similar to cold and flu symptoms, there are key differences. “Typically, with the flu or other viruses, you’ll experience more systemic symptoms, such as body aches, fatigue, and fever,” she says, noting that fevers are rare with allergies.
If you’re dealing with allergy-like symptoms, Dr. Iddings recommends trying over-the-counter, non-drowsy antihistamines to manage them. Additionally, she suggests staying aware of weather changes, as fluctuating temperatures can trigger seasonal allergies.
For symptoms that persist or worsen, she advises seeing a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
