Jersey City resident and activist Katie Brennan has announced her intention to run for the New Jersey State Assembly in Hudson County’s 32nd district next year.“Today, I am proud to announce my candidacy to represent my Jersey City and Hoboken neighbors in the General Assembly” said Brennan. “As a survivor of sexual assault, I pledge to be a fighter for those who feel forgotten by their representatives. As a woman who was unafraid to speak truth to power even in my darkest days, I pledge to make our government more accountable and transparent. I look forward to a spirited campaign and to serving the people of Hudson County in Trenton.”Brennan became widely known in 2018 after alleging that she had been raped by Al Alvarez, a fellow staff member of Gov. Phil Murphy’s gubernatorial campaign. Alvarez denied that a rape had occurred and prosecutors ultimately declined to charge him. Brennan later sued both the state and Murphy’s campaign, ultimately settling for $1 million, $600 thousand of which she donated to the Waterfront Project, a Hudson County not-for-profit that works with victims of sexual assault. Her attorneys received the remaining $400 thousand as legal fees.Brennan will be taking on the current first-term assembly member, Jessica Ramirez. In 2023, the little-known Ramirez, was chosen by the Hudson County Democratic Organization to run for the seat after the HCDO withdrew its support from then Assembly member Annette Chapparro. Both Brennan and Ramirez would appear to have big name backers. Brennan is closely allied with Jersey City Ward E Councilman James Solomon and spoke at his recent announcement of a run for Jersey City mayor. According to New Jersey Globe, Ramirez will likely run on a slate with Mayor Steven Fulop, who is running for Governor.Brennan currently works as a consultant with nonprofits and a victim’s rights law firm. She previously was chief of staff at the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency. She also held the position of senior advisor to the deputy mayor of Housing and Economic Development in the administration of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. She subsequently joined Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration as executive director of the New York State Office of Resilient Homes and Communities. The post Activist Katie Brennan to Run for NJ Assembly appeared first on Jersey City Times.
