South Carolina launches free concealed weapons permit courses statewide
Oct 25, 2024
(WCIV) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has launched a free Concealed Weapons Permit instructional program, as mandated by the recently enacted Constitutional Carry law.
This new state law requires that two free CWP courses be offered in each county every month.
SLED has partnered with certified instructors and select law enforcement agencies to provide these classes at no cost to South Carolina residents. To be eligible, participants must have a South Carolina driver’s license or own real property in the state. Attendees must bring a handgun and 25 rounds of ammunition for the shooting portion of the class, though arrangements can be made to rent a handgun from the instructor.
The program is open to individuals aged 18 and older and does not require attendance in one’s county of residence. The free courses do not replace existing classes but offer the same CWP program without the instructional fee.
Participants will receive at least four hours of instruction covering basic firearms safety, fundamentals, nomenclature, self-defense laws, and regulations for carrying a firearm legally in South Carolina. The course concludes with a 50-question multiple-choice test and a 25-round qualification course, both of which require a passing score of 70% or higher.
To register, visit SLED’s website, select the desired county, and submit a request for a class date. Confirmation and class details will be emailed seven days before the class. For further inquiries, students can email [email protected].
