CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A dog and cat were exposed to a rabid raccoon in one Charleston County neighborhood. The South Carolina Department of Public Health said the raccoon was found near Ponce De Leon Avenue and Wespanee Drive. It was submitted to DPH’s laboratory on Oct. 22 and confirmed to have rabies the next day. Officials say no people are known to have been exposed; however, a dog and cat were exposed and will be quarantined as required by the South Carolina Rabies Control Act. If you, someone you know, or your pets have come in contact with this raccoon, or another animal that potentially has rabies, call DPH’s Charleston office at 843-953-4713 during normal business hours. State health officials say the raccoon is the fifth animal in Charleston County to test positive for rabies this year.
