Halloween weather in WNY can be as eclectic as the costumes themselves. This time of year, pretty much every flavor of weather is fair game. Now less than a week out from October 31st, we're getting a solid feel for what Halloween 2024 will look and feel like. Spoiler alert, Mother Nature won't have any wintry tricks up her sleeve this year. A strong area of high pressure is set to take over toward the middle part of next week. That should allow for temperatures to surge into the 70s Wednesday with our current expectation being Halloween will do the same. Historically, Halloween in Rochester seldom comes in that warm. We hit 70°+ only 8% of the time (7% in the 70s, 1% in the 80s). Rochester kissed 80° on Halloween in 1971. The early model suite guidance paints a generic picture of that high in the process of breaking down later Thursday. That could open the door to the arrival of a cold front. As expected, guidance is not in sync with the timing of this feature. A faster arrival throttles the warmth a bit and introduces rain and rumbles for trick-or-treaters. A slower arrival could very well bring us close to record high territory and keep rain at bay until later Thursday night. For what it's worth, it rains on Halloween around half the time. Roughly 5% of Halloweens feature at least a trace of snow in Rochester. We picked up over an inch of rain on Halloween of 2019, marking the wettest we've had.
